Adult Stem Cells May Yield 'Bionic Nerve'
Oct. 19, 2007
British researchers at the University of Manchester say they have
successfully transformed fat tissue stem cells from animals into
nerve cells, making possible a "bionic nerve" that may bring damaged
limbs and organs back to life.
After successful animal trials, the researchers are starting the
process in humans. The next step will be to develop an artificial
nerve that can be inserted in between the ends of a cut nerve in
order to regenerate it.
The resulting treatments are expected to be a major benefit for
traffic accident victims, cancer patients and people awaiting organ
transplants.
"These scientists are combining adult stem-cell research with tissue
engineering to find innovative ways of treating patients with
traumatic injuries to their limbs and organs," said Dawn Vargo,
associate bioethics analyst for Focus on the Family Action. "This is
just one more example of the ways researchers can move forward to
help patients without the use of destructive embryonic stem-cell
research."
