[StemCells] Re: Australians consider New guidelines to protect egg donors

Scoff as you will, but Calla Papademus, who, at age 22, stroked out on
the table while donating at Stanford found the complications serious,
as does Angela Hickey misses her daughter, who died as a result of drug-
induced mass egg harvesting. Then there's the woman who was lured by
US$250 (3x her monthly wage) and then abandoned by the egg brokers who
left her with a lifetime of complications.

The complications were quoted from Suzanne Parisian, M.D., a former
Chief Medical Officer for the FDA, and confirmed by more research than
I can post. Most countries, including China, have restrictions due to
the risks.

Other feasibility issues include lack of donors. In the UK there is a
3-4 yr. wait for eggs for reproduction - and the demand ever
increasing. Harvard has spent $100,000 trying to get donors - but no
one has volunteered in over a year.

There aren't zillions of extra embryos at the clinics for years,
either. They are thawed, used, and replaced by newly frozen ones.
Long Island IVF, for example had 1,663 embryos frozen and 1,641 thawed
(primarily for future family building) in 2005.

Then there are the conflict of interest issues within the universities
who are both deciding the treatments and profiting from any 'extra'
embryos. (As well as the researchers publically advocating hES who
also are partners in companies that would benefit from federal funding.)

In Europe, the UK has been accused of commercializing IVF, resisting
safer alternatives that are less lucrative, in particular natural cycle
IVF (cost approx. $1200 vs $6,000-$8,000).

To some, a 1% risk of long-term health risk (perhaps preceded by a 10%
chance of dramatic hospitalization) is worth trying to fix a medical
problem they are having.

But, to put women at risk who receive no medical benefit goes against
the WMA guidelines for research subject.
