Stem cell stock surges on scientific announcement

By: Bradley J. Fikes - North County Times

OCEANSIDE ---- Shares of International Stem Cell Corp. are up 66
percent Wednesday after the company said it had achieved a major
scientific advance. This morning, shares traded at $1.00 each, up 40
cents for the day.

The Oceanside-based company (OTCBB:ISCO) has found out how to make
stem cells that are less likely to cause immune rejection if
transplanted into patients, said Jeff Krstich, chief executive. This
makes it economically feasible to create varieties, or lines, of stem
cells that could be turned into replacement cells or organs, he said.

A paper describing the feat was published online today in the
scientific publication, Cloning and Stem Cells Journal. It can be
found at http://tinyurl.com/2oxdlh.

Humans each have an individual immune system identity determined by
genetics and influenced by race. To get a close enough match to avoid
rejection, Krstich said 50 cell lines would be enough for the entire
world's population. Without the advance from chief scientist Elena
Revazova, hundreds of thousands or millions of stem cell lines would
be needed, Krstich said.

Stem cells are the "ancestral" cells that differentiate into the
various kinds of tissues and organs in the human body. The cells
developed by Revazova are "parthenogenic", created from unfertilized
human egg cells.
