[StemCells] STAT3 Controls Cancer Stem Cell Survival

STAT3 Controls Cancer Stem Cell Survival This essay is reposted from our subscription blog in the public interest.

Boy am I in the wrong line of work.

OncoMed, a small private biotech company, is developing a monoclonal antibody that will bind and specifically destroy cancer stem cells. I have written extensively about cancer stem cells. They are resistant to both chemotherapy and radiation and are responsible for the re initiation of cancer cell growth after non-stem cells have been destroyed by conventional chemo/radiation.

Glaxo SmithKline has invested up to $1.4 billion dollars, including incentives, in this young company. Big Pharma is losing patent protection at a rapid rate. It is MUCH less expensive to invest in or to purchase the product line of another company than to conduct in-house research.

The Wall Street Journal recently announced that Pfizer, one of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, is closing its Ann Arbor, Michigan research facility and laying off 2100 employees. One of the senior scientists being laid off lead the team that developed Lipitor, an anti-cholesterol drug that thus far has generated $60 billion dollars in sales. Clearly, there is no loyalty in Big Pharma Land.

A recently published paper shows that the viability and maintenance of cancer stem cells is dependent on both PI3K/AKT and STAT3 signaling.

There is NO need for yet another $50,000 to $100,000 anti-cancer drug. Natural medicines, properly administered, can effectively block both AKT and STAT3 pathways.

And we will prove it.

Stay tuned....
