JOY AS LITTLE EVA GIVEN ALL-CLEAR
BY TIM HEALY
10:30 - 22 September 2007
Doctors have given the all-clear to young leukaemia sufferer Eva
Winston-Hart.
Four months after receiving a life- saving stem cell blood
transplant, the three-year-old no longer shows any signs of the
disease.
Eva, from Market Harborough, was given the blood from the umbilical
cord of a baby boy born in America in June last year.
The frozen cells were then flown to Britain and injected into Eva to
replace her diseased bone marrow in a procedure carried out in May at
Birmingham Children's Hospital.
Since then, doctors have been monitoring the growth of the new bone
marrow to see if it has continued to be leukaemia-free.
The final bone marrow tests results were released on Thursday and the
doctors say no traces of leukaemia can be found.
Overjoyed parents, Amy and Dave, are now hoping to contact the
donor's family to thank them for their help in saving Eva.
Amy said: "Our debt to the couple who stored their son's cord blood
is incalculable and eternal."
Dave said: "We were at the hospital on Thursday and the doctors told
us that the last bone marrow tests they are going to take have proven
totally clear. It is unbelievable.
"Now we are concentrating on building up her immune system so she can
come off the other drugs and have the Hickman line - an intravenous
catheter - removed and she can go on to a complete diet.
"We now intend to contact the family of the boy whose cord blood was
used. We know he was born in June last year, five months before the
disease was diagnosed.
"Without his blood cells we would not be where we are now.
"We shall write to his parents and another letter to the boy, which
will be forwarded via the Anthony Nolan Trust.
"Hopefully we can meet them some day.
The matching cells were the only ones found in a worldwide search of
11 million potential donors. The family have launched a petition to
have an umbilical cord blood bank established in Britain by the
National Health Service to increase the chances of finding matching
cells for other leukaemia sufferers.
Dave said: "Copies of the petition are available across the country
and we know of names being collected in Ireland and Spain."
They are hoping to collect thousands of names before Eva's fourth
birthday in November.
A Birmingham Children's Hospital spokesman said: "It is wonderful
news that no signs of the disease have shown up on the tests. It
means the leukaemia is in remission and the procedure has worked.
"We will continue to monitor her. It will take five years before we
can say for certain she has been cured."
