Stem Cell Activity Follows Circadian Rhythyms

Research
The effectiveness of stem cell therapies may rely not only on the
nature of the cells involved, but the time of their application.
In a study published today in Nature, Mount Sinai School of Medicine
researchers showed that hematopoeitic stem cells may behave
differently depending on when they are harvested or injected.
So-called HSCs are a type of adult stem cell that is formed in bone
marrow, turns into different types of blood cells and may someday be
used to treat cancer.
For this to happen, scientists need to understand as much as possible
about how HSCs work in the body, and today's study is a small but
potentially important piece of the puzzle.
Mice in the study produced most of their HSCs about five hours after
the laboratory version of nightfall, and the cells were most active
about five hours after sunrise. The behavior of the cells appears to
be tightly bound to the circadian cycle. When harvesting HSCs for
therapeutic use, say Mount Sinai team, researchers should take these
cycles into consideration.
Is this groundbreaking, stop-the-presses news? Not unless you're a
stem cell scientist -- but it's a fascinating peek into the finely
tuned complexities of living bodies, and into the progress of
potentially lifesaving research.
