Area scientists may be on the verge of finding a new way to treat
prostate cancer.
Researchers are now looking at cancer stem cells.
Prostate cancer is frustrating. Even when it appears its completely
wiped out, it can come back and spread to other parts of the body.
But now area researchers are going after cancer stem cells in an
effort to stay one step ahead of this disease.
John Lyon has been through five forms of chemo in the last four years
trying to keep his prostate cancer away.
For years, doctors have focused treatments on wiping out the tumor.
But now researchers at Roswell Park Cancer Institute in Buffalo say
stem cells may be the real problem.
Scientists say they may hide during chemo or radiation then later
morph into actively growing cancer cells and move to other parts of
the body.
Dr. James Mohler says "If even one stem cell survives, you're going
to have an entire tumor reconstituted, and in a more aggressive form."
Researchers are now looking for new ways to kill the cancer stem
cells before they get a chance to initiate growth, possibly tricking
them so they will be killed during chemo or radiation treatment.
