[StemCells] Pigs for People Partz

(Once again proving my theory ... )

Doctors Use Pig Organs To Regenerate Tissue
Feb. 7, 2007
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) ¯ At Pittsburgh's McGowan Institute of Regenerative
Medicine, experts say they are using pig guts to make new body parts.

Experts say sources, like liver, skin and small intestines of a pig,
provide a large quantity of the material needed to regenerate tissue.

The material, or matrix, researchers say is the connective tissue
that gives our body parts structure, like a scaffolding. It's made of
collagen, mostly.

"A pig's collagen and other molecules that are in the matrix are
very, very similar to our collagen, or to a rat's collagen, or
probably a dinosaur's collagen," said Dr. Stephan Badylak.

The cells have all been washed away. Doctors say the remaining matrix
can then be shaped into the body parts that are to be replaced in a
human being. As the body heals, the matrix releases chemical signals
to a person's own stem cells to come and grow and become a blood
vessel, a windpipe, or part of the stomach.

But doctors say the treatment is far from widespread use.

"To be mainstream, five to seven years, and that's assuming there's
success in the early trials," says Badylak.

Doctors say the idea is to change the way the body heals, either to
grow new specialized tissue, or to decrease scarring. Especially for
conditions that have no good solution with current treatments, like
esophageal cancer.

Human trials with the application are sent to begin soon in
Argentina.

The biggest challenge Badylak says is getting doctors to think about
healing in a new way, and to consider regenerative medicine for these
difficult problems.

Meanwhile, Dr. Badylak hopes similar trial will begin in the U.S. in
the next year.
