New discovery could mean an end to fillings

Scientists in Kocaeli produced stem cells from teeth.
Researchers at the Kocaeli University Stem Cell and Genetic Treatment
Research and Application Center (KÖGEM) have for the first time in
Turkey produced stem cells from teeth, a development with great
future potential for dental medicine.
KÖGEM opened in November 2007, noted Professor Erdal Karaöz, the head
of the center, which has been carrying out differentiation studies
with the aim of producing new cartilage, bone, nerve, liver and
muscle cells. "We have been conducting our studies for four months,
and our goal for the first six months was to produce stem cells from
all possible sources, including humans and animals, and to complete
our characterization studies," said Professor Karaöz. He noted that
they have so far managed to produce human stem cells from amniotic
fluid, bone marrow, blood and fatty tissue.
Karaöz added that they have for the first time in Turkey produced
stem cells from two separate areas of the same tooth by isolating
them. KÖGEM worked in cooperation with the Ýstanbul University
faculty of dentistry on the project. "With this study we proved that
we can produce stem cells from teeth as well as other body tissue. We
managed to isolate stem cells from deciduous teeth (milk teeth), a
wisdom tooth and even a cavity. Producing new stem cells from a
cavity is important in terms of treating them in the future," he
noted.
Dentists currently treat cavities by drilling out the rotten tooth
and filling the void with special cement and; however, in the future
it may be possible to fill the tooth with its own tissue, grown in
laboratories, making the tooth good as new.
"We will first test this method on animals to determine whether these
cells will produce tooth tissue in the cavity area. If it does, we
will try to produce three-dimensional teeth in laboratory
conditions," said Karaöz, adding that they were planning a Scientific
and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBÝTAK) project in
relation to this.
