Clinic to sell made-to-order stem cells
March 23, 2008 12:25am
A SYDNEY clinic will become the first company in the world to sell
made-to-order stem cells produced from women's unwanted IVF embryos.
The Stem Cell Company, part of Sydney IVF, is using rejected or
leftover embryos that carry genetic diseases to grow new human cells
for research - but, on the holiest weekend of the Christian calendar,
the Catholic Church condemned the move.
A spokesman called the move offensive, and argued that embryos should
be allowed to perish "with dignity" rather than kept suspended
between life and death.
Embryonic stem cells are considered a valuable research tool because
they can be developed into cells for any part of the human body,
including the heart, brain and skin.
Made-to-order stem cells with genetic diseases are being sold to
researchers in the US and Singapore, where they will be used in
experiments to try to develop new treatments or cures.
Pharmaceutical companies are expected to be the next big buyers, as
testing drugs on human stem cells instead of live animals is more
cost-effective and authentic.
Stem cells multiply indefinitely and can be used to test thousands of
drugs at once.
A NSW ban on stem-cell research was lifted, amid controversy, last
year.
It is a condition that women who have donated leftover embryos to
Sydney IVF will be informed on the progress of research involving
their cells.
Sydney IVF medical director Professor Robert Jansen told The Sunday
Telegraph it was in the interest of IVF patients who carry genetic
diseases to donate their embryos to help find a cure or better
treatments.
Chris Meney, director of the life, marriage and family centre at the
Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney, believes excess embryos should be
allowed to perish rather than used in research.
